Westfield

Town in Hampden County, southwest Massachusetts; population (2000) 40,100. It is located 15 km/9 mi west of Springfield, on the Westfield River. The town has manufactured paper, furniture, machinery, firearms, bicycles, cigars, leather products, tools, and precision instruments. It was incorporated in 1669 and was made a city in 1920.

Originally a trading post for the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Westfield is so named because when it was incorporated it was the most western Massachusetts settlement.

Westfield has 7 entries on the National Register of Historic Place including a school and tavern. Stanley Park (72 ha/180 acre) has an arboretum and a carillon and there are three museums in the area. Westfield State College (1838), one of the state's first teachers' colleges, is in the town

Westfield

Town in Union County, northeast New Jersey; population (1990) 28,900. It is located 13 km/8 mi west of Elizabeth. Westfield is mainly a residential suburb of New York City. It produces such products as furniture and paper and leather goods. Settled in the late 1600s, it was part of Elizabethtown until 1794, and was a centre of Revolutionary War activity.
