Westmoreland, William Childs

Westmoreland, William Childs (1914–2005)

US general who served as commander of US forces in Vietnam 1964–68. He was an aggressive advocate of expanded US military involvement there.

Born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, USA, Westmoreland was a 1936 graduate of West Point military academy where he was superintendent from 1960–63. He served in various administrative capacities at the Pentagon 1953–58.

In Vietnam 1963–68, he ended his active military career as army Chief of Staff 1968–72.
