Westmoreland County

County in southwest Pennsylvania; area 2,675 sq km/1,033 sq mi; population (1990) 370,300. It is located to the southeast of Pittsburgh and bounded by the Conemaugh River to the northeast and Laurel Hill to the southeast. Its administrative headquarters is Greensburg. The county is a coal producer, with industrial centres at Jeanette, Ligonier, Latrobe, and Monessen.

Westmoreland County

County in east Virginia; area 588 sq km/227 sq mi; population (1990) 15,500. Its administrative headquarters is Montross. It is historically agricultural, today relying on truck farming, fishing, and tourism. In the county are Wakefield, George Washington's birthplace, and Stratford Hall, the family home of Robert E Lee.

In the next place, we were full a hundred miles up Potomac River, in a part which they call Westmoreland County, and as that river is by far the greatest in Virginia, and I have heard say it is the greatest river in the world that falls into another river, and not directly into the sea, so we had base weather in it, and were frequently in great danger; for though we were in the middle, we could not see land on either side for many leagues together.
