Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.07 sec.

Weston, Edward (1886–1958)

US photographer. A founding member of the ‘f/64’ group (after the smallest lens opening), a school of photography advocating sharp definition. He is noted for the technical mastery, composition, and clarity in his California landscapes, clouds, gourds, cacti, and nude studies.

In his photography, Weston aimed for realism. He never used artificial light and seldom enlarged, cropped, or retouched his negatives. His aesthetic principle dominated American photography for many years.
