Wetaskiwin

Town in central Alberta, Canada; population (1991) 10,600. It is located 59 km/37 mi south of Edmonton. The supply centre for a mixed farming area, it has grain elevators, stockyards, creameries, a flour mill, a canned-milk plant, and a mobile-home factory. Natural gas and oil wells and coal mines are in the vicinity. Named ‘place of peace’, it was originally a siding on the Calgary-Edmonton Railway (1891). With the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway (1906), it grew as a division point, shipping wheat and cattle. The headquarters for the Battle River Regional Planning Commission are here.
