Wethersfield

Town in Hartford County, central Connecticut; population (1990) 25,700. It is situated on the west bank of the Connecticut River, to the south of Hartford. It is primarily residential, but has some light industry, including the production of seeds and the manufacture of tools and dyes, hydraulic valves, and electrical components.

Founded in 1634 by settlers from Watertown, Massachusetts, it was one of the first permanent settlements in the state and one of the first inland settlements in New England. Wethersfield has more than 100 18th-century houses, including the Webb House (1752), where George Washington met the Count de Rochambeau to plan French and American troop movements during the Revolution.
