Wetumpka

Town and administrative headquarters of Elmore County, east-central Alabama; population (1990) 4,700. It is situated on the Coosa River, 16 km/10 mi northeast of Montgomery. It was a cotton shipping centre until railways through Montgomery took the business away. Fort Toulouse (1714), a French outpost, was sited here. The town now has light industries and is home to the Tutwiler prison, Alabama's women's facility.
