Weymouth

Town in Norfolk County, east Massachusetts; population (2000 est) 54,000. It is located on Hingham Bay and the estuarial Weymouth Fore and Back rivers, 19 km/12 mi southeast of Boston. It is a suburb for Quincy and Boston, with some recreational facilities on the coast. Weymouth was established as Wessagusset in 1622, and was renamed and incorporated as Weymouth in 1635.

The town was a 1630s farming and fishing community. It established an ironworks in 1771, and shoe manufacture in the community dates from 1853. Other industries have included the manufacture of fertilizer, lacquer, electronics, chemicals, and paper products. It was also supported by fishing.

The town has nine entries on the National Register of Historic Place including schools, a library, and a historic district. South Weymouth, one of several villages, is the site of a naval air station, constructed in an area of piney woods, that extends into adjoining Rockland, Massachusetts.
