It is a suburb for Quincy and Boston, with some recreational facilities on the coast. Weymouth was established as Wessagusset in 1622, and was renamed and incorporated as Weymouth in 1635.

The town was a 1630s farming and fishing community. It established an ironworks in 1771, and shoe manufacture in the community dates from 1853. Other industries have included the manufacture of fertilizer, lacquer, electronics, chemicals, and paper products. It was also supported by fishing.
