Whangarei

Port of North Island, New Zealand, 210 km/130 mi north of Auckland by rail; population (1996) 45,800. It is the chief town and seaport for an extensive dairy- and lamb-farming area. It is the site of New Zealand's only oil refinery (opened in 1964) and has cement and ceramic industries.
