Wharton

Town and administrative headquarters of Wharton County, southeast Texas; population (1990) 9,000. It is located 80 km/50 mi southwest of Houston, on the Colorado River, in a rice, cotton, oil, and sulphur producing area. It is a trade centre with a variety of light industries. The town is home to Wharton County Junior College (1946) and the Gulf Coast Medical Center.
