Whatmough, Joshua (1897–1964)

English linguist. He was an influential editor of Harvard Studies in Classical Philology (1932–34, 1941–48). Whatmough was born in Rochdale, Lancashire, England. He was educated in England at the Universities of Manchester and Cambridge before becoming chairman of the department of comparative philology (1926–51) and a member of the linguistics department (1951–63) at Harvard University. His many publications included Foundations of Roman Italy (1937) and Dialects of Ancient Gaul (1970).
