Wheelock, Eleazar (1711-1779)

US college president. A Congregational minister, he founded Moor's Indian Charity School in Lebanon, Connecticut, in 1754. He moved the school to Hanover, New Hampshire, in 1770, and reestablished it as Dartmouth College; he was president until his death. He wrote a Narrative of the Indian School at Lebanon (1762-75). Wheelock was born in Windham, Connecticut.
