Whettham, Graham (Dudley) (1927– )

English composer. Largely self-taught, he writes in a fairly conservative style: more honoured abroad then in his own country, he has published his works himself from 1970.

Dramatic

the opera The Chef who Wanted to Rule the World (1969), ballet The Masque of the Red Death (after Poe, 1968).

Orchestral

concertos for oboe, clarinet, and violin; four symphonies, Sinfonietta stravagante (1964), Sinfonia concertante (1966); Hymnos for strings (1978); An English Suite for orchestra (1984), Ballade for violin and orchestra (1988).

Chamber

two oboe quartets (1960, 1973), three string quartets (1967, 1978, 1980), horn trio (1976), concerto for ten wind (1979).

Choral

A Mass for Canterbury (1986).

Other

songs; music for brass band and for organ.
