Whippet tank

    0.06 sec.

Whippet tank

British light tank of World War I.

It differed from the other, lozenge-shaped, British tanks in having a low-set track, engine at the front, and an armoured compartment at the rear for the crew of three. Armed with three or four machine guns, it had a top speed of 12.5 kph/8 mph and was intended as a reconnaissance and pursuit machine to fill the role of cavalry in a break through. Production began late 1917 and numbers were used on the Western Front and in Mesopotamia.
