TriadOrganization involved in organized crime (drugs, racketeering, prostitution, human trafficking, contract killing) among Chinese mostly living overseas, especially in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau. The term was coined for the triangle that played a significant part in the initiation ceremony. Triad societies originated in the 18th century, aiming to overthrow the Manchu dynasty. They backed the Taiping Rebellion in 1851 and the establishment of a republic under Sun Zhong Shan (Sun Yat-sen) in 1912. triad
