Whiskeytown-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area

National recreation area in north California. It is comprised of three units, to the west and north of Redding, at the head of the Sacramento Valley. Each unit encloses a major reservoir.

Trinity: This unit lies around Clair Engle (or Trinity) Lake, which flooded several small farming towns. Weaverville, to the southwest, is an old gold rush town, and now serves as a trade and tourist centre famous for its Joss House, the oldest Chinese temple in California.

Shasta: Shasta Lake, formed by a 183 m/600 ft-high 1945 Central Valley Project dam on the Sacramento River, is California's largest artificial lake, with 600 km/370 mi of shoreline. It is very popular with boaters.

Whiskeytown: This unit, which is the closest to Redding, lies around Whiskeytown Lake, formed by a dam completed in 1963. It flooded the gold rush town of Whiskeytown.
