whistle-blowing

In business, exposing malpractice within an organization to the management, the media, or the appropriate authorities. While companies profess to support whistle-blowing when it occurs, in practice whistle-blowers are often ostracized and find it impossible to continue working for the same employer, and even difficult to find work in the same industry.

In the UK, the Public Disclosure Act 1998, also known as the Whistleblower's Charter, has sought to remedy this with some success. Whistleblowing is often related to discriminatory practices within the workplace and often occurs in public service organizations such as the police or the health system.
