Whitbread, Fatima (1961– )

English javelin thrower. Traditionally considered too short at 1.36 m/4.46 ft to excel at the javelin, Whitbread secured an Olympic bronze in 1984 and in 1985 became the first woman to throw a javelin over 76 m/249 ft. She set a world record of over 77 m/253 ft the following year. She took the world championship title in Rome in 1987 and the Olympic silver medal in 1988.

Whitbread was adopted by her physical education teacher and trainer, former British international javelin thrower Margaret Whitbread, having been abandoned by her parents as a baby and brought up in a children's home in east London.
