Whitbread, Fatima (1961– )| English javelin thrower. Traditionally considered too short at 1.36 m/4.46 ft to excel at the javelin, Whitbread secured an Olympic bronze in 1984 and in 1985 became the first woman to throw a javelin over 76 m/249 ft. She set a world record of over 77 m/253 ft the following year. She took the world championship title in Rome in 1987 and the Olympic silver medal in 1988. |
