White, E(lwyn) B(rooks) (1899–1985)

US writer. He was long associated with the New Yorker magazine and renowned for his satire, such as Is Sex Necessary? (1929; with the humorist James Thurber).

With William Strunk, Jr., he published The Elements of Style (1935), considered a definitive style manual for the English language. White also wrote children's classics: Stuart Little (1945), Charlotte's Web (1952), and The Trumpet of the Swan (1970).
