White, Lynn , Jr

White, Lynn (Townsend), Jr (1907–1987)

US historian and college president. He was an internationally-renowned medieval scholar specializing in medieval technology and the religious background of industrialism. He taught at Princeton and Stanford universities (1933–43), was president of Mills College (1943–58), and then taught at the University of California, Los Angeles (1958–74). His books include Medieval Technology and Social Change (1962) and Medieval Religion and Technology (1978). White was born in San Francisco, California. He studied at Stanford University, Union Theological Seminary, and Harvard University, gaining his PhD in 1934.
