White, Minor

White, Minor (1908–1976)

US teacher and editor. His career began slowly with part-time teaching jobs (1937–41) until he went to Columbia University to study art and aesthetics in 1945. Hired as photographer for the Museum of Modern Art, he founded Aperture magazine in 1952 and began lecturing on how to ‘read’ a photograph. He taught at the George Eastman House (1952–57) and at Rochester Institute of Technology (1955–64). White was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
