White Bird

Small town in Idaho County, northwest Idaho; population (1990) 100. It is situated on White Bird Creek, in the Clearwater Mountains, 80 km/50 mi southeast of Lewiston. The first battle of the Nez Percé Indian War was fought here on 17 June 1877.

Suddenly a great white bird flew up out of the boat, and neither of the men stirred nor noticed it; it circled round, and then came sweeping overhead with its strong wings outspread.
Two great white birds with red lights on them stood there on stilt-like legs, and the beach of the island was unmarked, save by the skeleton print of birds' feet.
