White Plains

Town and administrative headquarters of Westchester County, southeast New York; population (1990) 48,700. It is situated midway between the Hudson River, to the northwest, and Long Island Sound, to the southeast. It is the commercial, retail, and financial centre of Westchester, and has offices of a number of major corporations. The College of White Plains, a branch of Pace University, is in the town.

Settled in 1683, White Plains became an important post station for 18th-century stagecoaches. George Washington retreated to White Plains after evacuating New York City in 1776, and fought a battle here against William Howe. Washington's headquarters are now open to the public.
