White SeaGulf of the Arctic Ocean on the northwest coast of Russia, on which the port of Arkhangelsk stands; area 90,000 sq km/34,750 sq mi; average depth 60 m/200 ft, maximum depth 330 m/1,082 ft. There is a warship construction base, including nuclear submarines, at Severodvinsk. The North Dvina, Mezen, and Onega rivers flow into it, and there are canal links with the Baltic, Black, and Caspian seas. In winter the bays are often ice-bound, with drifting ice offshore.
