White Stripes, the

US rock band. Jack White (born John Gillis, 1975– ; guitar and vocals) and Meg White (1974– ; drums) formed the duo in Detroit, Michigan, in 1997. Incorporating a variety of styles, including garage rock, punk, folk, blues, rockabilly, and country, the group gained a following at the end of the 20th century on the indie music scene. Despite only ever performing as an unaccompanied two-piece band, they are renowned for their powerful and energetic sound, and their live shows are famous for their use of improvisation and unorthodox cover versions. Albums include their self-titled debut in 1999, De Stijl (2000), White Blood Cells (2001), and Elephant (2003), Get Behind Me Satan (2005), and Icky Thump (2007). Their single and video ‘Fell in Love with a Girl’, popular on MTV, helped propel them to stardom.

The White Stripes joined other bands, such as the Strokes, with whom they toured, in a popular music movement influenced by classic rock and roll, rejecting contemporary trends in rap and hip hop, and creating a raw, minimalist sound. The duo won Grammy Awards in the rock or alternative music categories for Elephant, Get Behind Me Satan, and Icky Thump.

The duo, with similar complexions and jet black hair, were reported to be brother and sister, a fabrication they perpetuated. They were in fact married 1997–2000; Jack took Meg's surname. The mystery surrounding their relationship gained a great deal of publicity. The band is also known for its signature red and white colour scheme and peppermint candy motif, featured on their album covers and Web site.
