cast ironCheap but invaluable constructional material, most commonly used for car engine blocks. Cast iron is partly refined pig (crude) iron, which is very fluid when molten and highly suitable for shaping by casting; it contains too many impurities (for example, carbon) to be readily shaped in any other way.
