Whiteman, Paul (1890–1967)

US bandleader. With the collaboration of leading jazz musicians he developed a style he termed symphonic jazz, and commissioned and premiered Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue in 1924.

He played the viola with the Denver Symphony Orchestra and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, and founded his first band in 1919. Most of his orchestrations were done by Ferde Grofé, the first performance of whose Grand Canyon Suite Whiteman gave in 1931.
