Whitemarsh

Town in Montgomery County, southeast Pennsylvania; population (1990) 14,900. It is situated on Wissahickon Creek and the Schuylkill River, 22 km/14 mi north-northwest of Philadelphia. It was the site of George Washington's encampment in 1777 during the battle of Germantown. Whitemarsh is today a largely residential suburb on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. It contains units of Fort Washington State Park.
