whithorn

Early English musical instrument of the oboe type, made of willow bark with a double reed of material from the same tree. It was formerly used in Oxfordshire for the Whit-Monday hunt.

Whithorn

Town and former royal burgh in Dumfries and Galloway unitary authority, Scotland, 18 km/11 mi south of Wigtown; population (2001) 1,000. Whithorn and Isle of Whithorn, a small port on Wigtown Bay lying 7 km/4 mi to the southeast, are associated with St Ninian, Scotland's earliest Christian missionary and bishop, who landed nearby around 397.

Candida Casa, his monastery and burial place, became a place of pilgrimage for many hundreds of years. Whithorn Priory, now in ruins, was built in the 12th century, and St Ninian's Chapel, founded in the 13th century, still stands at Isle of Whithorn. St Ninian's Cave lies on Port Castle Bay 4 km/2.5 mi to the southwest.
