Whiting, John Wesley Mayhew

Whiting, John Wesley Mayhew (1908–1999)

US sociologist and psychologist. He worked as a researcher for Yale's Institute of Human Relations from 1938–47, using anthropological and psychoanalytical perspectives to inform his work on child development and socialization. Later associated with Harvard University, he also directed the Child Development Research Unit of the University of Nairobi in Kenya (1966–73). He published Child Training and Personality in 1953. Whiting was born in Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. He was educated at Yale University, gaining his PhD in 1938.
