Whittier

Town in Los Angeles County, southwest California; population (1990) 77,700. It is situated at the southern foot of the Puente Hills, 21 km/13 mi southeast of Los Angeles city centre. Industries include oil production and the manufacture of auto parts, tools, electronic equipment, and other machinery. Whittier College (1887) and Rio Hondo College (1960) are in the town.

The town was founded in 1887 by a colony of the Society of Friends from the Midwest, who named it after John Greenleaf Whittier, the Quaker poet. It was at first an avocado and citrus producing centre, then grew as a Los Angeles suburb.
