Wich, Günther (1928– )

German conductor. He made his debut at Freiburg in 1952, where he continued to conduct opera until 1959. Between 1965 and 1987 he worked at Graz, Hanover, and Duisburg/Düsseldorf. He conducted Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute in London at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1968. He was often heard in modern music, giving the British premiere of Zimmermann's Die Soldaten/The Soldiers (1972), performances of Moses und Aron, and all three one-act operas by Schoenberg. He has also recorded in the Baroque repertory.
