Wickenburg

Town in Maricopa County, west-central Arizona; population (1990) 4,500. It is situated on the Hassayampa River, 80 km/50 mi northwest of Phoenix. A processing centre during the 1863 Vulture Mine gold rush, the settlement grew rapidly, and by 1866 it was Arizona's third largest. Cattle raising eventually replaced mining, and Wickenburg also became an early holiday ranch centre. It is now primarily a winter resort.
