Wickham, Henry (1846-1928)

British planter who founded the rubber plantations of Sri Lanka and Malaysia, and broke the monopoly in rubber production then held by Brazil. He was commissioned to collect rubber seeds from Brazil, where they grew naturally, by Sir Joseph Hooker of Kew. These were cultivated at Kew Gardens, Surrey, and re-exported to the Far East.
