Widnes

Industrial town in Cheshire, England, administrative headquarters of Halton unitary authority; population (2001) 55,700. It is linked with Runcorn on the other side of the River Mersey by road and rail bridges. Widnes is the centre of the British chemical industry, and produces metals.
