Wieliczka

Town in Kraków province, Poland, 13 km/8 mi southeast of Kraków; population (1990) 171,000. It stands in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. Vast salt deposits, mined since the 11th century, exist under the town.

There are 11 subterranean galleries, stretching 300 km/187 mi. Some of the chambers are richly carved with statues of salt.
