Wihtol, Joseph (1863–1948)

Latvian composer. He studied with Rimsky-Korsakov and others at the St Petersburg Conservatory; in 1886 he returned to Latvia and took an important share in its musical independence as a separate nation, becoming director of the National Opera at Riga and director of the Latvian Conservatory.
