Opera by Lortzing (libretto by composer, based on a play by Kotzebue), produced in Leipzig on 31 December 1842. Schoolmaster Baculus shoots a buck on the estate of Count of Eberbach and his betrothed, young Grhen, offers to intercede for him. But knowing his philandering reputation, the Count's sister (Baroness Freimann) impersonates Grhen instead. After disguise and confusion, a happy ending.
