Wilhelm, (James) Hoyt (1923–2002)

US baseball pitcher. Wilhelm played more games than any other pitcher in history. Born in Huntersville, North Carolina, he distinguished himself in combat during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge (1944). During his 21-year career (1952–72), mostly as a reliever for the New York Giants and Chicago White Sox, he appeared in 1,070 games. A right-handed knuckleballer, he was elected to baseball's Hall of Fame in 1985.
