Wilhelm (IV) the Wise (1532-1592)

Landgrave (count) of the German state Hesse-Kassel 1567-92. A leading Protestant, he fought against Emperor Charles V in 1552, obtaining the release of his own father, Philip the Magnanimous, from captivity. An able ruler, he was noted for his economic and administrative reforms, and for his support of such scientists as Tycho Brahe and Jost Bürgi.
