Wilkes Barre

City in northeast Pennsylvania, USA, on the Susquehanna River, 23 km/14 mi southwest of Scranton; population (1996 est) 44,400. It lies in an area where anthracite was once mined. Heavy machinery, furniture, textiles, wire, and tobacco products are manufactured. First settled in 1769, it was named after two Englishmen, and grew as a mining town.

The city is part of the metropolitan area of Wilkes Barre-Hazleton. It is connected by express highways to Philadelphia in the south and New York to the east.

Flooding is a constant threat. The Susquehanna caused serious flooding in the city in 1972.
