Wilkesboro

Town and administrative headquarters of Wilkes County, northwest North Carolina; population (1990) 2,600. It is situated on the Yadkin River in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, 84 km/52 mi west-northwest of Winston-Salem. Founded in 1777, it has produced wood and food products. The town is home to Wilkes Community College (1965).

North Wilkesboro stands across the river; population (1990) 3,400. It separated from Wilkesboro in 1891 and became more industrial, with furniture, textile, and leather factories. It is today a major poultry processing centre, and home to the Holly Farms company.
