Willey, Gordon R(andolph) (1913–2002)

US anthropologist and archaeologist. Born in Chariton, Iowa, he was a leading archaeologist and theorist of New World prehistory and was known particularly for his settlement pattern studies. He was Bowditch Professor of Archaeology at Harvard (1950–83). His published works included reports on Peruvian, Panamanian, and Maya archaeology and An Introduction to American Archaeology (1966–71). He won the 1974 Kidder Medal.
