Karloff, Boris (1887–1969)

English-born US actor. He achieved Hollywood stardom with his role as the monster in the film Frankenstein (1931). Several sequels followed, as well as appearances in such films as The Mummy (1932), Scarface (1932), The Lost Patrol (1934), The Body Snatcher (1945), and The Raven (1963).

Born in London, he immigrated to Canada around 1911 in search of a theatrical career. Joining a touring stage company and frequently given the role of the play's villain, he adopted the sinister-sounding name Boris Karloff for professional use.

In 1941 Karloff gained acclaim on Broadway in Arsenic and Old Lace. He continued in television and films until Targets (1967).
