Also found in: Wikipedia 0.06 sec.

William I (1772-1844)

King of the Netherlands 1815-40. He lived in exile during the French occupation 1795-1813 and fought against the emperor Napoleon at Jena and Wagram. The Austrian Netherlands were added to his kingdom by the Allies in 1815, but secured independence (recognized by the major European states in 1839) by the revolution of 1830. William's unpopularity led to his abdication in 1840.
