Paterson, William (1745–1806)

Irish-born US Supreme Court justice and political leader. A member of the Constitutional Convention 1787, he was elected one of New Jersey's first US senators 1789. After serving as New Jersey governor 1790–93, Paterson was appointed to the US Supreme Court by President Washington, serving as associate justice 1793–1806. He was noted for his vigorous prosecution of cases under the Sedition Act of 1798.

Born in Ireland, Paterson emigrated to America with his family 1747 and graduated from Princeton University 1763. Admitted to the bar 1769, he served as a member of the provincial congress 1775–76 and as New Jersey attorney general 1776–83.
