Opera by Cui (libretto by A N Pleshtcheiev, based on Heine's drama), produced in St Petersburg on 26 February 1869. Betty's jealous husband MacGregor kills her lover Edward Ratcliffe; Betty dies soon afterwards. Edward's son William is haunted by their ghosts until multiple deaths appease the ghosts.
