Williams, Alberto (1862-1952)

Argentine pianist, conductor, poet, and composer of English and Basque descent. He studied at the Buenos Aires Conservatory and later in Paris, where he studied piano with Chopin's pupil Mathias, harmony with Durand, counterpoint with Guiraud, and composition with Franck. In 1889 he returned home, where he gave piano recitals, conducted symphonic concerts, and founded the Buenos Aires Conservatory.

Works

nine symphonies (1907-39, no. 2 La bruja de las montanas) and other orchestral works; choruses; works for violin and piano and cello and piano; El rancho abandonado and other pieces; songs.
