Williams, Anna

Williams, Anna (Wessels) (1863–1954)

US physician and bacteriologist. Born in Hackensack, New Jersey, she taught at the New York Infirmary (1891–95, 1902–05) and was assistant director of the New York City Research Laboratories (1905–34) as well as a prolific writer. Best known for research on infectious diseases and discovery of an effective diphtheria immunization, she also fought to advance the cause of women doctors.
